Abstract

In this paper, we focus on the optimization of electric energy consumption in public lighting of a region in Agadir proposing the integration of renewable energy sources, especially the photovoltaic (PV). Two models have been adopted, simulated and compared with experimental results under the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The first model is devoted to the simulation of the conventional street lighting in the area supplied by the “Substation 9” in Dcheira El Jihadia in Agadir city, while the second model provides modeling and simulation of the PV powered public lighting system, as an alternative for the street lighting in the testing area. The results of simulation show that the solar street lighting system is much more economical and, moreover, it is inexhaustible and non-polluting compared to the classic street lighting.
